Camera Conundrum

Thu Jul 16, 2009, 8:53 PM
So, I'm thinking of getting a new camera. Yeah, I love the photos I take with the one I have now, because it has a spectacular lens and great manual focus tuning, but let's consider the rest of the camera for a few moments:

1) 6 years old
2) uses Compact Flash memory cards
3) only 3.2 MP (2048 x 1536 rez)
4) has only one flash setting: blinding
5) slower than crap
6) battery hog
7) limited flexibility (can't modify shutter speed, etc.)
8) maximum 3x zoom (digital zoom is worthless, so I don't use it)

I want to get a digital SLR, but I'm torn between a Canon and a Nikon. I have my dad's old 35mm Nikon SLR, and I'm curious if anyone has ever successfully used traditional SLR lenses with a digital camera.

So... what camera would YOU recommend?

i would say get a Nikon because they are really good in quality and easy 2 understand when using..however the Canon cameras can have the same quality and can be compact for you to use. So really it depends on the settings and lens focus u like on the camera.

Thanks  The more lenses, the better. I'm a self-taught photographer (self-taught jewelry designer, self-taught web designer, self-taught pianist... sensing a theme here? :giggle:) so I'm always teaching myself something new, and I would love to be able to take photographs of the many birds that frequent our area. Birds, of course, will fly away if you get to close, which means I'll need some high quality zoom lenses.

A coworker of mine recommended a Nikon, too, so that's so far Nikon 2, Canon 0
